Preview of the Summer 2022 Arctic Fire Season

The ABC-iCAP Spring 2022 Webinar focused on previewing summer conditions for boreal and Arctic fire activity for 2022. This included recent emissions and modeling results from fire activity in the Pan-Arctic from approximately 2010 to 2021. Model results predicting fire activity were shared from the EU, Canada, and Alaska perspectives. Drivers of fire and the use of Indigenous and restoration prescribed burning in Canada and Finland were discussed. Overall, the panelists indicated a likelihood for a fire season not to match 2020 and 2021 – which were extreme years. The webinar had 49 attendees from 14 countries.
